Using my engineering and research experience I built a studio and high temperature propane gas kiln in 2003. My cement industry experience of chalk and clay extraction, the associated cement chemistry and high temperature kilns was useful preparation for high temperature firing and formulating glazes. My research habits of measuring and recording results has provided me with a large library of images and an associated database to chart what I have and not yet explored in terms of clay bodies, glazes, firing conditions and types of pots.

I trained in civil engineering and after 2 years as a Patent Examiner worked on the use of concrete in nuclear pressure vessels. Subsequently there were many years of research at The Cement and Concrete Association on the strength, deformation and durability of concrete and the underlying materials science of the cement binder. Finally I worked on environmental issues for the UK cement industry.
